Stage set for ‘adjustments’ in Sialkot

By Abid Mehdi

SIALKOT, Aug 20: The divided groups of the ruling PML have won 80 seats of nazims in 124 union councils in Sialkot district, according to official results released on Saturday.

The opposition, however, could hardly make its presence felt and so did the independent candidates who chipped in with a few seats. The PML-N has bagged 20 seats of UC nazims, PPP 14 and independent candidates have touched the double figure (10).

The situation was not clear till late on Saturday, as the PML high command has yet to openly declare its nominee though its inclination towards National Assembly Speaker Chaudhry Ameer Husain’s group is an open secret.

What conclusion the leading scorers among the PML groups draw for the top district slot after negotiations (adjustments) may take a few days.

The PML has won 31 UC nazim seats in Sialkot tehsil having 50 urban and rural union councils. The PML-N has got to 10 seats and the PPP five.

According to the breakdown, the PML’s Akhtar Variyo group has won the highest 19 UC nazim seats. Ex-district nazim Mian Naeem Javed’s group has bagged seven seats, Chaudhry Ameer Husain’s group one seat (earlier the speaker claimed to have bagged 12 seats in his electoral constituency, Bajwat), Federal Parliamentary Secretary Dr Firdaus Ashiq Awan’s group two seats and Punjab Industries Minister Ajmal Cheema’s group got two seats.

In the recently-created Sambrial tehsil, the PML’s Azeem Noori Group has knocked out all other rival factions by bagging 14 UC nazim seats out of 17. MPA Ghuman is the chairman of the Punjab Public Accounts Committee.

The PPP could get only two seats here while an independent candidate also stood victorious.

In Daska tehsil, there are 29 union councils in which the PML won 11 seats of UC nazims. The PML-N could get nine seats while the PPP bagged five. Four independent candidates were elected UC nazims.

In the 28 UCs in Pasrur, the ruling party groups won 24 seats. The PPP could get only two seats while one independent candidate was elected nazim. The ruling PML’s Akhtar Variyo Group got the majority in Pasrur tehsil — its stronghold — the official results revealed.
