MMA asks govt to release workers

Published August 20, 2005

RAWALPINDI, Aug 19: The Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) has warned the district administration to stop arresting innocent people and release those held in connection with local bodies elections.

The demand was made at a meeting of the Opposition parties, which was attended by the president of the Pakistan Peoples Party, Zummarad Khan, MMA leaders Dr Kemal Ahmed, Allama Abdul Jalil Naqvi, Abdul Majeed Hazaravi, Syed Shahid Pervaiz, Malik Asrar Ahmed, PML-N leader Sardar Nasim and representatives of the other parties.

They claimed that under a planned conspiracy, the ruling party was out to destroy the peaceful environment of the city. They also claimed that Rawalpindi had always been the citadel of opposition.

They alleged that by filing fake cases against the opposition candidates, large-scale arrests of the opposition supporters were being made in the local bodies polls.

The opposition leaders claimed that the Election Commissioner and other high-ups had been apprised of the situation.
