104 drown as ship sinks

QUITO, Aug 17: One hundred and four people drowned on Wednesday when an Ecuadorian ship carrying suspected illegal migrants sank in the Pacific off Colombia. A fishing boat reported rescuing nine people _ seven men and two women _ found clinging to a crate and buoys in waters off Colombia on Sunday, said Armando Elizalde, captain of the Ecuadorian port of Manta. The boat was carrying 113 people who wanted to enter the United States illegally, Mr Elizalde said. It set sail for Central America from Manta and last stopped at Esmeraldas.—AFP
