Unilever closes Nepal plant

KATHMANDU: Consumer goods maker Unilever has shut its plant in Nepal following a threat from Maoist rebels waging a deadly revolt in the Himalayan kingdom against the Hindu monarchy, officials said on Wednesday. The firm closed its plant indefinitely in Hetauda in southern Nepal due to fears of an attack from rebels linked to the All Nepal Trade Union Federation, which is demanding higher wages.

“Yes, we have shut down the plant,” an official at the firm said, without commenting on the reason for the decision. —Reuters
