17 killed in Iraq attacks


BAGHDAD, Aug 15: At least 17 people were killed and more than 30 others wounded in several attacks on Monday, including an explosion targeting the family of Iraqi Vice-President Adel Abdel Mehdi.

Two of Mehdi’s guards were killed in a roadside bomb 120 kilometers north of Baghdad as they escorted the family of the vice president, an official source said. None of Mehdi’s family members was hurt in the attack, the source added.

Three Iraqi soldiers were killed and two wounded in an attack at a checkpoint near Baquba, also north of Baghdad, an Iraqi military source said.

Mohammad Hussein, a member of the municipal council of Al-Khaliss, just north of Baquba, and his driver were shot dead by gunmen, a military source said.

Three civilians were killed in a roadside bomb in Tikrit, a police officer said.

In Baghdad, one Iraqi soldier was killed and another wounded when they came under fire in Al-Amiriyah, an interior ministry official said.

Three other Iraqi civilians were killed and six wounded when their vehicle hit a roadside bomb in Tikrit.—AFP
