Makina shocks favourites

By A Sports Correspondent

KARACHI, Aug 15: Three-year old filly Makina created quite a stir when she landed the Independence Day Cup as rider Waheed Baran performed a superb double in the Summer Gymkhana race meeting at the Karachi Racecourse on Sunday.

Ranked outsider in the field of five, Makina, superbly ridden by Abdul Aziz, outpaced the fancied aspirants to win the six furlongs race by half a length.

Makina had an unimpressive track record in the recent past. But by accomplishing the feat, it had done its owner M. R. Hussain and trainer Pervaiz proud.

Following second was bay colt Super Conqueror while Harry Potter settled for the third place.

Mr. Faisal Farooq’s King Of Kings and Shah Mardan Shah Pir Pagara’s Patricia were totally off colour finishing fourth and fifth.

The KRC Cup ended in a blaze of glory for another outsider Air Blue who notched up first win of his career. Pitted against twelve runners in the six furlongs race, three-year old filly Air Blue with jockey Waheed in the saddle, romped home beating closest opponent Butter Fly by 7 ½ length.

Earlier, Waheed piloted bay mare Sonia to victory in the five furlongs fourth race of the afternoon. Order Of The Day and Miss Maree had to be content with second and third positions respectively in the race that featured eleven participants.

Two-year old bay colt Zidane made an impressive debut by winning the Kingree Lodge Performance Cup spread over four furlongs while Ghazan Prince overtook Bang On Target in the last leg of seven furlongs race to annex The Lighting Stakes Cup.

The opening race, as expected, was won by Taneez with Prosmatic occupying second and Dushtiyani third. It was contested by fourteen horses’ after Piyari Mehbooba was scratched.

Jockey Faiz Muhammad rode home another outsider bay mare Rakhti in the second race which saw Cool Water and Dinoo Makrani scratched before the start of the race. The remaining two races were won by Secret Conquest and Puma King.

The Sindh Chief Minister, Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim, who was the chief guest also announced a donation of Rs.2 million for the Karachi Race Club.

Meanwhile, Syed Najeeb Ali Yousuf, an ex-steward of KRC, was also a happiest man on Sunday as he had won five of the total six jack pots thus pocketing an amount of Rs.2,05,000.
