Tremors jolt Karachi

KARACHI, Aug 13: At least three low-intensity earthquake tremors shook southern localities of the city on Saturday.

“Two minor quakes jolted the city at 1.47am. They measured 1.5 each on the Richter scale. The intensity of the quakes was too low to have an epicentre,” the director-general of the Pakistan Meteorological Department, Dr Qamaruzzaman Chaudhry, told Dawn on Saturday.

Another quake of negligible magnitude hit the city at 11.15am, he said.

Panic-stricken residents spilled on to the streets when their apartments were jolted in the early hours of Saturday.

The PMD director-general said that the Met Office was carefully monitoring seismic activity responsible for the earth tremors.

He said it was difficult to tell whether a quake of greater magnitude could pummel the city in the future.
