Candidates hold joint canvassing session

HARIPUR, Aug 13: Local government candidates at a joint canvassing session on Thursday promised to raise the standard of life of people of their constituencies by ensuring provision of basic amenities like gas, health care, pavement of streets, education, technical skill development centres, women’s computer training centres, and spending funds honestly.

The Dihat Dost Tanzeem, Islamabad, and the Women’s Voice, Haripur, had arranged joint canvassing session of candidates of local government elections here on Thursday. Candidate of Ali Khan, Sikandarpur and Haripur city, north, union councils attended the session with their supporters.

The candidates presented their manifestoes and answered questions from the audience.

A candidate for the post of Ali Khan union council nazim, Khurshid Anwar Khan, said he had spent over Rs10 million on development schemes during his last tenure and now he would establish computer literacy centres for women and vocational centres for youth. He said that, if elected again, would improve the irrigation and agriculture system and the watercourses in his area.

His rival panel of Haji Abdul Salam and Abdul Manan vowed to expose the corruption of their opponents and ensure distribution of funds and development schemes on the basis of equality. They said they would not claim travelling and dwelling allowances as office-bearers of the union council and use the amount for welfare of people.

Shahid Amin Khan and Ishtaiq Ahmad, candidates for nazim and naib nazim of north Haripur union council, promised to put an end to the politics of clans and earmark funds for women. They promised to struggle for devolution of power. They urged the voters to reject those candidates who were taking oath from them their supporters in the name of religion.

Their rival candidates, Mohammad Iqbal Chohan and Yunas Dosh, vowed to make his UC a model in the district.

Agha Shabir Ahmad and Abdul Razzaq, candidates for the posts nazim and naib nazim of the Sikandarpur union council, said they would create an endowment fund for the marriage of needy girls. They also promised to make the expenditures and income of union council public.

The Qazi Modoodul Haq-Malik Razmat and Mohammad Din Buka-Moosa Khan panels for the same UC also promised to solve the problems of people.

Farhat Naz, a candidate for councillor’s seat from Ali Khan UC, said she would work for ending undue restrictions on women, promoting enlightened moderation and setting up women’s computer and skill development centres.

Farzana Sajjad, who has returned unopposed on a seat for women peasants and workers, promised to bring about improvement in irrigation system and try to make the process of getting agriculture credit easy.
