LAHORE, Aug 11: The Supreme Court on Thursday sought the opinion of the Election Commission of Pakistan on the question of entertaining the ‘sanads’ of Shahadatus Sanvia as qualification of candidates contesting local elections as nazims or naib nazims.
The apex court also issued notice to the Punjab advocate-general to address the court on the issue on Friday. Shaukat Ali, a candidate for nazim of a union council of Faisalabad, has submitted that the question of ‘sanads’ should be clarified in the wake of conflicting judgments by two high courts. The Lahore High Court adjudged that certificates issued by private religious seminaries were not acceptable while the Peshawar High Court gave an opposite verdict.
