PJTA demands ‘white badge’ umpires for national events
ISLAMABAD, Aug 10: Arif Anis secretary of Pakistan Junior Tennis Association (PJTA) has called upon tennis chief Syed Dilawar Abbas to ensure that only white badge umpires supervise national tournaments.
The Pakistan Tennis Federation (PTF) had in its Annual General Meeting held on Jan 11 last year decided to have white badge umpires officiate national ranking tournaments.
But Anis pointed out that the decision was not being implemented at all. He cited the example of KC Ranking tournament held in Karachi recently where Khalid Rehmani, a secretary of Sindh Tennis Association and joint secretary of PTF supervised the matches.
“This is a clear violation of PTF’s own policy decision and is not going to do tennis any good,” he said. “Ever since the 2004 AGM, there has been no white badge umpire on show in tournaments that took place in Karachi.”
He added that it was not just Karachi where tournaments had no white badge officials. “Several competitions that have taken place in Punjab have seen no white badge umpires.”
Anis said that the KC tournament featured 8 to 10 events and if a boy had to play in three events, he was required to pay entry fee for each one separately.
