Shahab-Wazir clinch pairs event


KARACHI, Aug 8: Shahab Saeed-Wazir Durrani won the Scramble Mitchel Movement in the opening weekend bridge programme with a superb score of 69.64 per cent on Sunday.

Twenty-eight pairs were placed in two houses. Shahab and Wazir led the teams in the Green House. Akhtar Khan-S M Ilyas with 61.51 per cent finished way behind and Tariq Zafar-Syed Ameer Hasan made 60.71 per cent for the third position. There was a very close contest in the other house between top contenders. The veteran pair of S P Jamal-Taqi Reza once again made it to the top with 60.3 per cent.

Gulzar Bilal-Pervaiz Mirza finished second with 56.35 per cent and Azwer-Shakeel Chandna scored 52.78 per cent for the third spot. In the team event, fancied Candyland lived up to its reputation and won the title of the week with 90 Victory Points (VPs).

Starting with a deficit score against Mahmood IV 20-10, Candyland with its two regular pairs of Khalid Mohiuddin-Hasan Askari and Hamid Mohiuddin-Ziaullah Baig defeated Strikers 18-12, Winsome 25-5, Chandna 17-13 and EFU 20-10.

Fine Foods also scored 90 VPs. They lost two matches and won three against Alliance 25-5, Four Bidders 20-10 and Mehmood 20-10 and lost second round match to Attackers 11-19 and EFU 14-16. Chandna finished third with 87 VPs winning three matches. —APP
