KARACHI, Aug 6: Wasif Raza struck twice in Sui Southern Gas Company’s (SSGC) 3-1 victory over Habib Bank (HBL) in the All-Pakistan Governor’s Gold Cup hockey which rolled off at Hockey club of Pakistan on Saturday. The bankers took a confident start when they went 1-0 up through discarded Pakistan centre-forward Kashif Jawwad in the fourth minute of the first half.

SSGC did not take too long in replying as Wasif put the game on an even keel barely two minutes later. HBL, having an array of former internationals and Olympians, might have scored their second but a gallant dash by Mohammad Altaf prevented the bankers from scoring but injured the SSGC defender a minute before breather.

Sohail Abbas, the former Pakistan penalty corner expert, did no mistake and pulled the second for SSGC through a fast push past HBL goalkeeper Aijaz Khokhar in the 55th minute.

The winners sealed the fate of the match when Wasif again found the target following a brilliant pass from Ishtiaq Mobin in the 62nd minute. Pakistan Navy had smooth sailing with a 3-1 win against Karachi Electric Supply Corporation (KESC) thanks to a Moahmmad Azhar double.

Mohammad Azhar grabbed the first for the sailors a minute before the halftime and netted his second in the 59th minute, while Noman Jabbar completed the tally in the 63rd minute. KESC managed to score the consolation goal through Rizwan Khan three minutes before time.

Pakistan Steel handed a crushing 7-0 defeat to Sindh in a one-sided affair. Mohammad Rauf opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, before Liaquat Ali doubled the lead five minutes into second session.

Zaheer Ahmad increased the lead with a goal next minute, while Amir Shahzad made it 4-0 in the 48th minute.

Rashid Imran netted the fifth in the 58th minute, Mohammad Imran slammed home in the 65th minute, while Ishtiaq Ali wrapped up the proceedings three minutes before fulltime.

Sunday’s fixtures: PIA v Sindh; PTCL v Balochistan; HBL v Pakistan Police.
