99 elected unopposed in Bahawalpur

BAHAWALPUR, Aug 3: At least 99 candidates have so far been declared elected unopposed in the union council election in the Bahawalpur district. According to the deputy election commission, those elected unopposed are: nine UC nazims and naib nazims, six Muslim women candidates, 45 women peasants/labourers, two male peasants/workers, two minorities and 35 male general councillors.

He further said on Wednesday that a total 4,258 candidates were in the run to contest 1,280 seats of nazims, peasants/workers (both male and female) and minorities of 107 UCs in the Bahawalpur district.

DRIVE: The Tehsil Municipal Administration has launched a drive against encroachments on various city roads.

TMA squads on Wednesday removed unauthorized constructions and extended boundaries of shops on Circular Road, the General Bus Stand and other roads. Meanwhile, DCO Muhammad Ashraf has directed the TMA to continue the anti-encroachment operation to facilitate citizens.

THREE KILLED: Three people, including a minor boy, were killed in as many mishaps here during the last 24 hours.

Sheikh Sohail, a noted hockey player, was hit and killed by a speeding car on Circular Road. Police have registered a case against the absconding driver.

Mahmood Masih was repairing his desert cooler in his house in Gharib Colony when he touched a live wire. He received a severe shock and died on the spot. Shoaib (8) received shock when he touched a fan in his house at Mauza Khanqah Sharif. He also died on the spot.
