National age group swimming meet from Aug 6

PESHAWAR, Aug 2: All arrangements have been completed for the National age group swimming championship that will commence at the Qayyum Sports from Saturday.

Addressing a news conference on Tuesday Mohammad Asif Aurakzai, secretary of the NWFP Swimming Association said all the participating teams, would arrive in the city on Thursday. The next day, two-member scrutiny committee would carry out check-up of the players to determine their age.

Federal Sports Minister Malik Ajmal Khan would be chief guest at the inaugural ceremony of the three-day event, while the NWFP Governor would be chief guest on the concluding day, he said.

To ensure smooth conduct of the tournament, he said that an organising committee had been formed.

A total of 246 medals would be awarded to the players, apart from conferring awards on the winners and runners-up of all of the categories, he informed.

The tournament, he said would feature 55 individual events and 8 relays.

Teams of Islamabad and Wapda would participate only in under-18 category, while the rest of teams would compete in under- 12, 14 and 16 categories.

“Despite repeated requests, the NWFP Sports Board is reluctant to hand over the swimming pool to the association,” he claimed, adding that coaching camp for the under-14 would get under way from Aug 10, where players would be given valuable tips by qualified coaches.

NWFP TEAM: The secretary of the association also announced names of the players for the tournament.

Squad: Osama Qazi, Haroon Khan, Mohammad Usman, Jafery, Abbas Ahmad, Afaq Ahmad, Adnan Hashim, Adnan Haider, Waleed, Hamid Rahim, Abdur Rehman, Mohammad Yousaf, Nauman Gul, Arsalan, Mohammad Zahid, Asim Khan, Waqas Ahmad, Sikandar Suhail, Mohammad Hashim, Imran Hashim, Khalid Rahim, Hasan Qureshi.

He said that all these players had started training under coach Mohammad Hashim.
