HYDERABAD, Aug 2: Different regions in lower Sindh received heavy rains on Tuesday, followed by power breakdowns. A day-long power breakdown in Hyderabad and adjoining towns followed a heavy downpour which continued intermittently for several hours, disrupting civic life.

The breakdown led to disruption in water supply. The rain started at around 12 noon and continued intermittently till 4pm, inundating low-lying areas.

Work in the Sabzi Mandi was badly affected due to the absence of a proper sewerage. Knee-deep rainwater accumulated in the Mandi and filthy water also entered several shops, destroying fruits and vegetables being despatched to different cities.

Business activities in almost all main bazaars and shopping centres were also affected.

The rainwater accumulated in Liaquat Colony, Phuleli, Noorani Basti, Makrani Para, Gharib Nawaz, Nusrat Colony and other areas.

Almost the entire city and its adjoining towns remained without power for more than six hours and the power supply was restored at around 8pm.

The Water and Sanitation Agency failed to ensure regular water supply to residents as its two filter plants on the Jamshoro road remained without power.

When contacted, Wasa official Saleemuddin told Dawn that at the old filter plant, power breakdown occurred at 6am and the supply was restored at 12 noon. The plant again faced power shutdown at 12:30pm which was restored at 6pm. Same was the case at the 30MGD new filter plant where power supply, according to the Hyderabad Development Authority director general, went off at 11am and was restored in the evening.

Due to the power outage, hearing of more than 105 appeals, filed before the sessions judge of Hyderabad, who is the district returning officer, was affected as well. The hearing continued till late in the evening. Election Commission officials also faced difficulties in disposing of their work.

Hesco officials claimed that all feeders of the 11 grid stations of Hyderabad and its vicinity were switched off as a precautionary measure and when the rain stopped the feeders were tested and the power supply was restored. They said two transformers were damaged in the city.

THATTA: Moderate and heavy rains lashed the district and its suburbs on Tuesday, followed by a power breakdown.

Intermittent rains continued for the whole day. Knee-deep water accumulated in low-lying areas in coastal towns of Jati, Chuhar Jamali, Shah Bunder and Ladion and Sujawal and Mirpur Bathoro.

Towns and villages on the right bank of the River Indus received moderate rain.

Except for the district headquarters Thatta, power supply to other areas remained suspended for the entire day.

BADIN: Civic life remained paralyzed in the district due to continuous rain since Monday night.

The district also witnessed power breakdown, affecting water supply and the telecommunication system.

Knee-deep water accumulated on roads.

The rain started at 2am on Monday night and drizzling continued till Tuesday evening. Heavy rains hit the district at 3am and 2pm on Tuesday.

MIRPURKHAS: Rain hit the city and other areas of the district early Tuesday morning, inundating low-lying areas. The rain started at 5am and continued for an hour. Later, the rain again started and continued with intervals.
