Six candidates have returned unopposed on minority seats from union councils Maneri Payan, Topi East, Topi west, Gandaf, Batakara and Turlandi.
Only two minority candidates would contest election on minority seat from Swabi union council. The remaining 48 minority seats would remain vacant in the district because no one came forward to file nomination papers on these seats.
No one had filed nomination papers against Shamsher Khan and his deputy from Jalbai union council. This is the only pair of nazim and naib-nazim who returned unopposed and on the remaining 54 union councils a thorny contest is expected among 160 candidates.
Initially total 1,858 candidates filed their nomination papers from 55 union councils, but now only 14 98 candidates are in the field. Majority of the candidates faced the rejection of their papers.
The chief of District Coordination Committee (DCC) of the Aurat Foundation, Roohal Amin, said that comparing the filing of nomination papers with the previous local body election and the returning of unopposed lady councillors “we could call it a great development”.
He admitted that some of the women seats would remain vacant in different councils and criticized jirga members of Adina, Bamkhel and Shewa for barring women from participating in the elections.
He said that in the previous local body elections about 66 women councillors were elected from the district while all the remaining seats remained vacant, but this time only in three union councils the female candidates had failed to file their nomination papers.
