128,140 file papers for second phase polls


ISLAMABAD, July 30: As many as 128,140 candidates have filed nomination papers for second phase union council level local government elections being held in 56 districts on August 25. According to Election Commission figures, the candidates filed their nomination papers for six categories: nazim and naib nazim, general, women, peasants and workers, women peasants and workers and minority communities.

Out of total 3,054 union council of second phase polls, 1,810 are in Punjab, 521 in Sindh, 431 in NWFP and 292 in Balochistan. In Punjab, 78,392 candidates have filed nomination papers with 7,064 candidates for the slot of nazim and naib nazim, 35,009 for general seats, 9,338 for seats reserved for women, 16,531 for the seats of peasants and workers, 7,420 for those of women peasants and workers and 3,030 for the category of minority communities.

In Sindh, 22,553 candidates filed nomination papers with 2,132 for the slot of nazim and nazim, 9,628 for general seats, 2,821 for women’s seats, 4,657 for those of peasants and workers, 2,136 for those of women peasants and workers and 1,179 for minority community seats.

In the NWFP, 16,507 candidates have filed nomination papers with 1,687 candidates for the position of nazim and naib nazim, 7,719 for general category, 1,701 for women’s seats, 4,050 for those of peasants and workers, 1,278 for those of women peasants and workers and 72 for minority community category.

In Balochistan, 10,688 candidates have filed nomination papers with 1,085 for the slot of nazim and naib nazim, 4,198 for general seats, 1,496 for women’s seats, 2,291 for peasants and workers, 1336 those of women peasants and workers and 282 against the seats for minority communities.

The process of filing nomination papers ended on Wednesday midnight as the offices of the returning officers remained open till late night to facilitate the candidates. However, the details of nominations papers filed for the second phase was issued on Saturday. Processing of nomination papers will take its course during next few days with scrutiny process completing on Sunday. —-APP
