Iran rejects EU request

TEHRAN, July 30: Iran on Saturday rejected a European Union request to delay submitting EU proposals to solve a dispute over Tehran’s nuclear programme, a spokesman for the Supreme National Security Council said. He said ambassadors for the EU Three _ Britain, France and Germany _ had asked for the Aug 1 deadline for their proposals to be extended to Aug 7.

“We reject any delay. We are expecting their proposals to be submitted on Aug 1 and it should meet Iran’s minimum expectations,” Council spokesman Ali Aghamohammadi said.

BRITAIN’S STAND: Britain denied there was a deadline for the EU to make an offer to Iran.

“An exact date hasn’t been fixed,” said a Foreign Office spokesman in London, adding the parties were following only a general guideline of late July or early August.

The EU had said on Tuesday a package would probably be presented to Iran in the first week of next month. Asked whether the EU would submit the offer on Monday, the spokesman replied: “I very much doubt it, but I can’t confirm the dates.” —AFP
