Four WTO deputy DGs named

ISLAMABAD, July 29: The WTO Director-General Designate Pascal Lamy on Friday named his four deputy directors-general including an Indian. According to information reaching here, Mr Lamy, who assumes office on September 1, told the General Council in a statement that he had selected Harsha Singh of India, Alejandro Jara of Chile, Valentine Rugwabiza of Rwanda and Rufus Yerxa of the United States. Their terms of office would begin on October 1.

According to details, Mr. Singh, currently Secretary of India’s Telecom Regulatory Authority, is a former member of the WTO secretariat; Amb. Jara, currently Chile’s ambassador to the WTO since 2000, has served in the Chilean government since 1976. Ms. Rugwabiza has served as Rwanda’s Ambassador to the WTO since 2002 and is the first woman ever appointed as a Deputy Director-General for the WTO. Mr. Yerxa, a former Deputy US Trade Representative, has served the last three years as Deputy Director-General to Director-General Supachai Panitchpakdi.
