KARACHI: Plastic bags adding to pollution

KARACHI, July 28: Owing to the increasing use of polythene bags, the situation in Sindh and, especially in Karachi, is worsening. This was stated by the Sindh secretary for environment, Shamsul Haq Memon, here on Thursday.

He was presiding over a meeting in his office in connection with the increasing use of polythene bags.

“These bags choke the sewerage system,” the secretary for environment said.

The meeting stressed that the used bags be re-cycled and their weight be increased.

It was also stressed that awareness be created in the people to use paper and cloth bags instead of those of polythene.

The participants of the meeting said that polythene bags were also responsible for some of the traffic accidents as in some instances they stuck on the faces of motorcyclists and caused accidents.

Burning of the polythene bags give rise to various diseases and also affect the environment.

It was pointed out that the meeting was convened on the directive of adviser to the Sindh chief minister on environment and alternate energy, Mohammad Noman Saigal.

The meeting was also attended by the additional secretary, local government, Tariq Yaqoob Mirza, and Executive District Office for Community Development Rehana Saif. — APP
