ISLAMABAD, July 27: The first-ever Turkish expedition, comprising six members, successfully reached the summit of Gasherbrum-II making history for their country, says a press release issued by Nazir Sabir Expedition here Wednesday.
The team, led by Mr Serhan Pocan with members: Ms Burcak Ozoglu Pocan, Mr Soner Buyukatalay, Mr Serkan Girgin, Mr Bora Mavis, and Ms Elifeylem Koc made to the summit of the 8,035 meters high peak on July 22.
The G-II is the 14th highest peak of the world.
The president of the Alpine Club of Pakistan, Nazir Sabir, has felicitated the expedition and expressed the hope that mountaineering will add another dimension to the brotherly relations between Pakistan and Turkey.
Turkey, situated at a cross-road of Asia and Europe, is at 8th position among the countries receiving income through tourism.
According to a Turkish embassy statement, quoting the World Tourism Organization report, indicating that Turkey stood at 8th position among the countries that have received maximum income of about $15.9 billion through tourism with approximately 12 million tourists visited then country in 2004.
