UNITED NATIONS, July 26: Canada will formally table the Uniting For Consensus group’s framework resolution on the expansion of the UN Security Council in the 191-member UN General Assembly on Tuesday evening. The UFC resolution calls for expansion of the Council from 15 to 25 seeking only 10 new non-permanent members re-electable for multiple years.

The resolution submitted by the so called G-4 group seeks to create six new permanent and four non-permanent seats in the expanded Security Council. The African Union resolution tabled last week seeks to expand the Security Council to 26, six permanent and five non-permanent seats.

Amid reports of a compromise between G-4 and a group of African Union’s members, the diplomats here told Dawn that a vote on the compromise resolution could be scheduled for Friday afternoon.

Pakistan’s Ambassador Munir Akram said: “We believe the solution for security council reform can only be achieved by consensus and African Union’s plan would be highly divisive.” “We believe that the G-4 plan would split the UN members globally and the regions of the world. It’s not a good omen and its not likely to be implemented. It’s a dead end,” Mr Akram said.

Addressing a press conference the Secretary-General of Arab League Amr Musa also threw his support behind the UFC resolution saying that “Islamic countries have the best chance to serve on the Security Council under plan.”
