FAISALABAD, July 26: Police seized objectionable material during raids on a number of printing presses and offices of publishers and arrested their owners on the charges of creating religious hatred among the people.

Police conducted raids on the information got from the arrested activists of banned militant organizations.

The motive behind the crackdown was to trace the printing presses and their owners who published books Khutbat-i-Azam, Islam aur Munafqat, Phir Wohi Qaid-o-Bund, Khilafat-i-Rashida and Toot Gai Zanjeer which were taken into custody during a raid on an office of the Sipah-i-Sahaba Pakistan in the Rail Bazaar area last night.

The office is being run by close associates and relatives of the late Ziaur Rehman Farooqi.

Raids are being conducted in the Press Market, Aminpur Bazaar, Bhawana Bazaar and Santpura.

District Police Officer Amin Wains, in the meantime, said the operation against the militants would continue.

NOMINATION PAPERS: As many as 3,746 candidates from 289 union councils filed their nomination papers with 44 returning officers of the district here on Tuesday.

Reports said candidates for nazims, naib nazims and councillors slots along with their supporters thronged the offices of the returning officers and assistant returning officers to file their papers.

A number of candidates visited the RO offices along with their consultants and legal advisers. Some of the candidates were seen attaching with their nomination papers the manifesto provided by different NGOs in support of the government policies.

The city and Sadar tehsils have been divided into four towns — Jinnah, Lyallpur, Madina and Iqbal towns.

The lists of candidates would be displayed on July 28 for which arrangements had already been finalized by the local administration and officials of the election commission.

Special help centres and guidance desks have been set up by the local NGOs for the convenience of candidates, especially women.

Meanwhile, electioneering has gained momentum in the district after the announcement of election schedule. Leaders of major political parties have reportedly focused their attention on the union council elections as these members would cast their votes for the election of nazims and naib nazims of towns.
