Two bombs lobbed into house of journalist

GILGIT, July 25: Two home-made bombs were hurled into the house of a local journalist around 7:30pm on Sunday. The blasts damaged the interior, roof and windopanes of the house of Mr Khurshid Ahmed, president, Gilgit Press Club, near the city police station but did not cause any casualty to the seven inmates.

Police have lodged an FIR against unidentified miscresnts and started investigations. This is the second attempt on Mr Ahmed’s house who is the bureau chief of an Urdu daily, Khabrain, Islamabad.

The house was first attacked in March this year after violent clashes in Gilgit. Mr Ahmed said he had no personal anmity with any one. Gilgit Union of Journalists president Imtiaz Ali Taj condemned the attack on the journalists house and demanded an investigation into the incident.

He said that they had already intimated the security officials regarding the threats to journalists but no concrete steps had been taken so far to safeguard the lives and property of the journalists in Gilgit who are most vulnerable to the threats and attacks from religious extremist organizations.

Faisal condemns incident: Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Northern Areas Makhdoom Syed Faisal Saleh Hayat has condemned the bomb attacks at the residences of lady Dr Hafiza Bano and her younger brother Khurshid Ahmad at Raja Bazaar in Gilgit, writes Our Reporter from Islamabad.

Talking on telephone from Los Angeles, the minister affirmed the government conviction to root out extremists and terrorists from Northern Areas, a message received here quoting the minister said.

PROMOTING PEACE: Federal secretary for Kashmir and Northern Areas affairs, Rasool Bux Baloch, has called upon elected representatives to play an effective role in promoting peace and harmony in society, says APP.

The invitation was made by the federal secretary on Monday at a high-level meeting on law and order. The meeting was attended by Gilgit-based members of the Northern Areas Legislative Council and functionaries of the Northern Areas administration.

Northern Areas chief secretary, Maj (R) Manzoor Nadeem, and inspector general of police in the Northern Areas, Sarmad Saeed Khan, briefed the federal secretary on law and order situation.

Mr Baloch asked legislators to cooperate with the administration in eliminating the menace of sectarianism and ensure that peace prevailed in the area and development there was uninterrupted.

He said strict action would be taken against violators of the law.

The federal secretary said the recommendations submitted by elected representatives would be forwarded to the federal government and action would be taken in light of the recommendations.

Deputy chief executive Northern Areas, Mir Ghazanfar Ali Khan, Hafeez-ur-Rehman Khan, Himayatullah, Mirza Hussain and Mohammad Ali Akhtar presented recommendations to the federal secretary.

Mr Baloch requested elected representatives and the Northern Areas administration to speed up their efforts for peace and harmony in the area.
