KARACHI: Probe into CM’s links with Al Qaeda demanded

By Our Reporter

KARACHI, July 25: The Pakistan People’s Party on Monday repeated the allegation that Chief Minister Arbab Ghulam Rahim was victimizing liberal and moderate candidates, especially of Awam Dost group, and demanded a thorough probe into his ‘links with Al Qaeda and Taliban elements’.

“Such a reign of terror has been unleashed against moderate political forces and journalists by a military general’s chosen CM, having a dubious background and extremist views, needed a swift probe by the Supreme Court before he causes a major loss to the country,” said PPP leaders Raza Rabbani, Nisar Khuhro, Taj Haider, Nafees Siddiqui and Engineer Gianchand in a joint statement issued from the party’s media cell at the Bilawal House.

Senator Rabbani also talked to the Secretary, Election Commission of Pakistan, and informed him about the modus operandi of kidnapping Awam Dost candidates to force them to switch the sides or technically knock out them by keeping them hostage during the scrutiny of nomination papers.

According to him, the election commission informed him that it was taking some steps, and directives in this regard had been passed on to the concerned officials. The PPP leaders, nevertheless, regretted that no action had been taken against the man who had started terrifying people in Sindh as was he doing to the people of Tharparkar district.

They pointed out that Mohan Lal Meghwar, a PPP leader from Tharparkar and elder brother of Engineer Gianchand, who had defeated Arbab’s nominees from Jhirmirio union council had been implicated in five false cases. They regretted that the ban on the transfers and postings had never been implemented in Sindh since the announcement of LB poll schedule. Even on Saturday last, Allan Abbasi, an inspector, was promoted and posted as TPO Mehar, they pointed out.

They said that in Tharparkar, relatives of Awam Dost candidates for nazim slots from Kaloi were being pressured to lodge a kidnapping case against the local PPP leaders. In Karachi, two Awam Dost candidates for minority seats, Robin Masih and James Qadir, had been kidnapped while the proposer of a woman minority candidate Ms Razia Bibi was kidnapped and severally thrashed, they added.
