UNITED NATIONS, July 25: The President of UN General Assembly Jean Ping has said that he will introduce his own reform proposal on UN Security Council expansion if all other avenues are exhausted and if member states have no objection.
“If the president is asked to take his responsibility, he will, by proposing something which will be more ambitious than the proposals on the table,” Mr Ping said in an interview with this correspondent.
However, he made is clear that he would act only if there was no opposition from the member states, some of which have tabled their own proposals on the expansion of the Security Council.
Answering a question, Mr Ping said he would like to see that Security Council reform did take place during the current 59th session and they did not have to wait for the 60th session, which would begin in September, adding that the status quo was ‘unacceptable.’
The proposals on the table include one from the so-called Group of Four countries — Brazil, India, Germany and Japan. They want four permanent seats for themselves plus two for Africa and four non-permanent seats.
