Crane nears second career win


MILWAUKEE (Wisconsin), July 24: American Ben Crane was within sight of his second career win and a wire-to-wire victory after carding a six-under par 64 at the $3.5 Milwaukee Open on Saturday, giving him a two shot lead heading into Sunday’s final round.

After returning flawless scorecards his opening two rounds, Crane carded his first two bogeys of the week on another stormy day at the Brown Deer Park Golf Club, but mixed them with eight birdies to leave him on 19-under 191 and two shots clear of Scott Verplank.

Verplank, chasing his first win since the 2001 Canadian Open, began the day two shots back of the lead and finished the same way also signing for a six-under 64.

The 41-year-old American got his round off to a shaky start with a bogey on the first but was error-free the rest of day to get to 17-under 193.

Lurking just five shots back at 14-under 196 are Chris Smith and 2003 champion Kenny Perry, who already has two wins under his belt this season.

DREDGE AHEAD

GUT KADEN (Germany): Britain’s Bradley Dredge took a two-shot lead into the final round of the Players Championship of Europe after the delayed third round was completed on Sunday.

Dredge carded a three-under-par 69 to move to 12-under-par 204, taking over from second-round leader Niclas Fasth of Sweden.

Fasth shot a 72 to share second place with countryman Henrik Stenson, who posted a 69, and Ireland’s Peter Lawrie, who returned a 70.

The tournament was forced into a 36-hole finale on Sunday after Thursday’s play was washed out by rain.
