Case against MPA, others for protest: Police allege interference in crackdown

By Our Correspondent

SHEIKHUPURA, July 24: The Syedwala police have registered a case against 200 people, including Punjab Parliamentary Secretary for Culture Agha Ali Haider, a PML MPA, on the charge of damaging public property during a procession.

The case has been registered under section 16 of the MPO and an Anti-Terrorism Act.

According to Nankana Sahib DSP (Headquarters) Rai Zameerul Haq, the Syedwala police had arrested the other day six activists of an outlawed religious organization from the town. MPA Agha Ali Haider, along with scores of people, reached the police station and tried to get the detainees freed.

On SHO Rai Akram’s refusal to release the activists, he said, the MPA got infuriated and along with 200 people marched toward markets for forcibly closing shops as a protest. He said the protesters damaged public property and threw traffic on the Jaranwala-Syedwala Road out of gear for hours together.

The police have so far arrested more than 15 people named in the FIR, sources said. They said raids were conducted at various places for arresting more protesters.

Some people took strong exception to the police’s act of scaling boundary walls of many houses.

Nankana Sahib DPO Tahir Alam Khan said the arrests of alleged militants were part of the ongoing campaign.

Meanwhile, the Sheikhupura police held another three members of a banned religious organization during raids in two districts.

Those taken into custody from Sheikhupura and Nankana Sahib districts were Abu Bakar, Bilal Ahmad and Khalid Mahmood.

ROBBERS KILL MAN: Three robbers shot dead a man on putting up resistance during a bid at Mohallah Mirzapur (Syedwala) on Sunday.

Reports said three armed men barged into Muhammad Yousaf’s house and tried to collect valuables. On resistance, they shot dead Yousaf. The Syedwala police are investigating.

DEAD BODY: The City A-Division police found the body of a man from New Abadi Arianwala here on Sunday.

According to the police, there were no scars on the body which might be of an addict.

CASE: The Farooqabad Saddar police claimed on Sunday to have registered a case against a former SHO of the same police station on wrong investigation in a murder case.

The SP crime probed the allegation and found Inspector Arsalan Khan guilty.
