NWFP’s participation doubtful

Bureau Report

PESHAWAR, July 22: The participation of the NWFP swimming team in the National junior age group swimming championship has become doubtful as ten of its swimmers have fallen ill due to contaminated water at the pool. “The government is yet to take any step to save the swimmers from host of ailments at the Adil Khan Swimming Pool at the Qayyum Sports Complex,” alleged Muhammad Asif Orakzai, secretary of the NWFP Swimming Association.

He said that the swimmers, who are scheduled to take part in the championship commencing from Aug 6, had fallen sick.

The swimmers included Abdur Rehman, Adnan Hashim, Qazi Amaar, Qazi Osama, Zahid Ali, Arsalan, Mohammad Riaz, Mohammad Amaad and Adnan Khan.

Meanwhile, two officials from Pakistan Sports Board, on Friday visited the swimming pool and inspected the facilities and arrangement there.

Director-General Sports, NWFP, Mazullah Khan, told reporters that nothing was wrong as the people were still swimming at the pool. “Without the use of swimming pool, many people fell victims to host of ailments,” said, Mr Khan.

“The sample of the water from the swimming pool is chemically unfit for human consumption due to the presence of nitrite. It contains very heavy load of micro-organism (bacteria),” said, the report conducted at the Public Health Food Analysis, Laboratory, Peshawar a few days ago.

Officials of the association alleged that the directorate of sports was responsible for the dilapidated condition of the swimming pool claiming that the directorate was allowing people to swim by selling tickets to them that made it polluted.

“We cannot stop ticketing system, as we have to pay salaries to the people who are working at the complex on fixed salaries,” he said in response to the association’s allegation that 500-700 people swam in the pool simultaneously.
