Ijaz and Farzana storm into semifinals

By Our Sports Correspondent

LAHORE, July 22: Ijaz Ahmed and Farzana Saleem registered upsets in men’s and women’s singles events to move into the semifinals of the 8th Ameer Abdullah Khan Rokri badminton tournament on Friday. Ijaz, ranked 11th, dumped fifth seed and much experienced Aamir Islam 15-10, 15-12. Ijaz dominated the proceeding and hardly allowed Ijaz to dictate terms with his powerful smashes and drop shots.

Aamir tried to bounce back in the second and fought till 10-all before Ijaz completed the win to book a place in the semifinals. Top seed Wajid Ali went to full distance before beating Atiq Chaudhry 15-9, 7-15, 15-1 to make last four.

Wajid won the first game easily but he did not exhibit his true game in the second, allowing Atiq to stage a comeback, winning the second game.

But Wajid was back to his best in the third game as conceded only one point to win it and the match as well.

National champion Omar Zeeshan trounced Shabbar Hussain in a one-sided match 15-5, 15-3 while Waqas Ahmad toppled Atif Nadeem after a gruelling fight in the first game 17-15, 15-1.

Farzana ended the march of national champion Ayesha Akram in three games 7-11, 11-1, 11-3.

Ayesha made a fine start winning the first game, but she was erratic in the second. Farzana dropped only one point before romping home to level the score 1-1.

Dominating in the third game, Farzana displayed an aggressive game in the third to win it convincingly to shock the national champion.

Sara Khan outplayed Farzana Shaheen 11-2, 11-3 while Saima outclassed former champion Uzma Butt 11-6, 8-11, 11-7.
