Cabinet resolves to continue crackdown

By Our Reporter

ISLAMABAD, July 21: The federal cabinet here on Thursday reiterated the government resolve to continue crackdown on extremists until they are eliminated from the society. Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz, presiding over the cabinet meeting, said the institutions and elements found involved in fanning hatred, sectarianism and militancy would not be tolerated and would be brought to justice. Interior Minister Aftab Ahmed Sherpao informed the cabinet about the current law and order situation in the country and the government’s measures to arrest extremists after the 7/7 London bomb blasts.

The cabinet was informed that about 200 arrests had been made over the past few days in the crackdown on extremist elements.

The interior minister said law-enforcement agencies were busy round the clock to make maximum arrests in various parts of the country.

He said the government was not against those madressas which only imparted education but it would never tolerate those which were involved in objectionable activities.

TRAIN PILE-UP REPORT: Minister for Railways Mian Shamim Haider presented the inquiry report on the Ghotki triple train crash.

Official sources told Dawn that the inquiry report had held the driver of the Karachi Express responsible for the accident as he did not stop at red signal at the Sarhad Railway Station and rammed his train into the stationary Quetta Express.

The report suggests short and long term measures the government should take to avoid such situation in the future.

The prime minister directed the railway ministry to take stern action against those responsible for the tragic incident, both at staff and managerial level.

The cabinet approved the establishment of Pakistan-Iran Joint Investment Company.
