Senate session postponed indefinitely

By Our Staff Reporter

ISLAMABAD, July 21: The Senate session scheduled to be held on Friday was postponed on Thursday, said State Minister for Overseas Pakistanis Senator Tariq Azeem. Talking to Dawn, the minister said a large number of senators had informed the chairman that they would not be able to attend the session as they were busy in the forthcoming local government elections.

Responding to a question, the minister said that new date for the session would be announced later but it seemed that it would be after the elections.

Meanwhile, Opposition Leader in the Senate Raza Rabbani lashed out at the government for adjourning the session and termed it a unique incident in the parliamentary history.

Talking to Dawn, Rabbani said that the session had been postponed because the country was facing a complex situation and the rulers did not have courage to face these issues on the floor of the house.

Mr Rabbani said the world over, parliament sessions were called to chalk out a strategy to deal with the national issues, but in Pakistan the Senate session had been postponed at a time when the country was facing crises.
