KARACHI, July 21: A total of 11,265 nomination papers were filed against 2,314 seats of 17 8 union councils in Karachi district where election has been scheduled for August 18. The district is divided in five zones with different number of UCs. The zone-wise break up shows that the West and Central zones have 42 UCs each, while the South zone has 27, East zone has 46 and Malir zone has 21 UCs. Under the new arrangements made through an amended ordinance, each UC comprises 13 members, including its nazim and naib nazim with some other members to be elected on reserved seats i.e. Muslim general (4), Muslim women (2), peasants/workers male (2), peasants/workers female 2 and minority (1).
According to the figures provided by the EC, as against the Muslim general seats, the highest number of nominations was filed in Malir zone where its ratio is 1:9. For the 84 seats in 21 UCs, 807 nomination papers were filed.
Malir zone was followed by West zone where for the 168 general seats in 42 UCs 1,259 nominations were received showing a ratio of 1:7.
For the 178 UCs of Karachi district against 712 Muslim general seats
The total number of nomination papers filed for 712 Muslim general seats for 178 UCs of Karachi district was 4,639. For the 356 Muslim women seats, 1,508 papers were filed; for 356 seats of peasants/workers (male) 2,229; peasants/workers (female) 1,129; and for joint seats of nazim and naib nazim 1,087 nomination papers were filed. As against the 178 minority seats, 603 aspirants filed their papers.
In West zone, 368 nomination papers were filed against 84 Muslim women seats, 609 against 84 peasants/workers (male) and 256 for an equal number of peasants/workers (female). For the 42 minority seats, a total of 116 papers were filed.
As against the 84 seats of nazim and naib nazim, 258 nomination papers were submitted.
In Central zone, for the 168 Muslim general seats, 777 nomination papers were filed whereas for 84 Muslim women seats, 317 nominations were received. For the 84 peasants/workers (male) and peasants/workers (female) seats, 382 and 258 nomination papers were filed respectively. As against the 42 minority seats, 115 papers were filed and for the 84 joint seats of nazim and naib nazim, 231 nominations were filed.
As far as the South zone is concerned, 692 nomination papers were filed for 108 Muslim general seats in 27 UCs. The number of nomination papers filed for 54 Muslim women seats was 180, for 54 peasants/workers (male), it was 350, and for 54 peasants/workers (female) the number was 133.
In all, 111 nomination papers were filed against 27 minority seats. For 54 joint seats of nazim and naib nazim, 156 nominations were received.
In the East zone with the highest number of UCs (46), 1,140 nomination papers were filed as against 184 Muslim general seats. For the 92 seats each of Muslim women, peasants/workers (male) and peasants/workers (female), 432, 530, and 336 nominations, respectively, were filed, whereas the number of papers received against 46 minority seats was 170. For the 92 joint seats of nazim and naib nazim here, 305 nominations were filed.
In Malir zone, 807 nomination papers were filed against 84 Muslim general seats, 211 for 42 Muslim women seats, 419 for 42 peasants/workers (male) seats, and 146 for 42 peasants/workers (female) seats. Ninety-one nomination papers were filed for 21 minority seats and 137 for 42 joint seats of nazim and naib nazim.
In the next phase, objections will be received on Friday (July 22) and scrutiny of papers would be held on July 23 and 24.
