KARACHI, July 19: Promising off-spinner Misbah Khan produced an outstanding performance on Tuesday to put Zone-VI in command of their three-day match against Zone-I in the A.K. Majeed Memorial cricket championship at the TMC ground.
Misbah returned magnificent figures of eight for 37 in 28.4 overs to spin out Zone-I for 179 and in the process, helped Zone-Vi obtain a first innings lead of 52.
By stumps on the second day, Zone-Vi extended their advantage to 196 by reaching 144 for three in the second innings. With the pitch already favouring spinners, Zone-I face an uphill task on Wednesday to bounce back.
Resuming at the overnight 41 for two in reply to 231 made by Zone-VI, Zone-I had actually consolidated their position by reaching 92 without further loss. But Misbah, who had taken one wicket on Tuesday, then ran through the rest of batting as the last eight wickets fell for the addition of 87 runs.
The only batsman to show some resilience was Imran Ahmed, who remained undefeated with a dogged 42 that included four boundaries. Earlier skipper Hafiz Asad made 33 with four hits to the fence.
Sarfraz Ahmed then strengthened Zone-VI’s grip on the match by hitting five boundaries on his way to 56 before falling to slow left-armer Noman Hussain, who captured four for 72 in the first innings.
Pacer Saad Azeem dismissed both openers Hasnain Rizvi (32) and Dolat Khan (5). Skipper Waqas Haroon was batting on 30 along with Hassan Raza (10) when play ended for the day.
