Senators demand report from PHF on ‘human smuggling’

By Our Sports Reporter

ISLAMABAD, July 18: Senators Murad Ali Shah and Muhammad Enver Baig want that the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) submit the report of their internal inquiry on “human smuggling” ahead of the July 22 meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Sports. In a letter sent to the secretary of the committee on Monday, the two have stressed that the PHF be intimated to act on the matter before their officials come down to Islamabad for the meeting.

The “human smuggling” relates to PHF’s alleged facilitation of people not associated with the national team in obtaining visas for European countries.

The senators have asked for Capt. Mukhtar Ali, alleged to be a key player in the racket, to appear before the committee to give his version of events.

“We are given to understand that the services of Capt. Ali, an employee of the PHF have been terminated on charges of human smuggling,” they wrote.

Murad and Baig have also called for submission before the committee the curriculum vitae of PHF’s director marketing Naveed Haider along with his appointment letter and details of his salary and perks.

Also asked for is a complete list of paid and unpaid employees along with their job titles and salaries and a legal opinion given by the office of Senator S.M. Zafar as stated by Akhtar Rasool, chairman of selectors.

The legal opinion is regarding holding of a public office by Akhtar who served an imprisonment as per orders of the Supreme Court.

This Friday’s meeting is likely to be attended by president of PHF, Tariq Kirmani and secretary Brig. Musarratullah Khan.

The Senate Standing Committee, headed by Senator Zafar Iqbal Chaudhry, is probing affairs of various national sports bodies and besides hockey has also held meetings with cricket, tennis and squash officials.
