KARACHI: Progress on underpass project reviewed

KARACHI, July 18: Chairman Karachi Port Trust (KPT) Vice-Admiral Ahmed Hayat on Monday visited the site of Schon Circle Underpass to review the progress of the construction work. The construction work of the project has been undertaken by the Frontier Works Organization (FWO) while the supervision is being provided by consultants M/s Nespak. This Rs699 million project is being funded by the KPT as part of the Tameer-i-Karachi Programme by President General Pervez Musharraf.

A KPT statement said that the work which commenced on December last was expected to be completed by June 2006. It was pointed out that so far 22 per cent work had been completed.

Diversion of traffic is almost completed and one-way road from Mai Kolachi to Railway crossing has been closed.

The first base course layer being laid over the extendible road section is under progress. Excavation on the left side is also in progress for the identification of services and improvements on sub-grade for the proposed road design.

It was pointed out that the foundation base concrete of the underpass was in progress on both the sides. Underpass excavation dressing and lean concreting between Do-Talwar and Schon circle was also in progress.

Hand carpeting at the vicinity of Schon Circle and Boating Basin is underway.

The underpass is likely to be opened by October 12.—APP
