Canal breach floods villages, crop
KHAIRPUR, July 17: Six villages and crops over hundreds of acres were inundated when a 100-feet wide breach occurred in the Khairpur west feeder (Abul Wah) at the RD-28 on Sunday morning.
The submerged villages are: Noor Narejo, Jhando Narejo, Hashim Narejo, Hamal Narejo, Ali Hassan Magsi and Kathi Kalhoro.
About 30 houses have been inundated in Hamal Narejo village from where water is flowing to the Khuhro-Ripri road.
Crops of cotton, sugarcane and vegetables standing over 200 acres have also been inundated with the breach water.
The affected villagers said irrigation officials were culpable of the breach.
They said they had given prior information to authorities concerned about the vulnerable embankments but the officials paid no heed.
The Khairpur west feeder supplies irrigation water to farmers of the Gambat taluka and its adjoining areas.
DCO Rizwan Memon said residents of five affected villages had been shifted to other nearby villages.
The DCO said the crops standing over 200 to 300 acres had been submerged.
The breach was not plugged till the filing of this report as irrigation officials arrived at the place of breach on Sunday evening.
The villagers told reporters that breach would be plugged by Monday because the water level in the canal had been lowered by this evening.
FLOOD: Lakes and ditches in the flood plain of the Indus River have been filled up with fresh water.
Local communities have welcomed the refilling of these natural resources of fishing and fresh water.
According to reports, fishermen have started fishing in Saeen Bux Katpar and Mirani lakes of the Kingri taluka.
Two boats are being used by the villagers for transportation.
Other lakes like Nadir Shah Ji Dhandh, Rahujan Ji Dhandh, Deh Mohil Ji Dhandh near Sajan Mahessar and dhoras (ditches) of the district have also been refilled with the flood water.
