Tiger Woods bites back with another flawless round
ST ANDREWS (Scotland), July 15: Tiger Woods marched relentlessly towards his second Open title on Friday when he fired a flawless second round five-under 67. It took the world’s number one to 11-under par for the championship - five clear of his nearest rivals.
Woods gave a stunning performance as Jack Nicklaus temporarily stole the show as he played his final round of professional golf.
If the Nicklaus show was emotional as the Home of Golf paid tribute to the world’s greatest golfer, Woods gave an exhibition of golf that reinforced the belief that he will surpass Nicklaus’ milestone of 18 Major titles.
Victory on Sunday will give the 29-year-old 10 Majors to his name.
Woods’ 67 brought back memories of 2000 when he ran away from the field to win by eight shots.
After two rounds he was on 133. Now five years later he is again on 133 after two rounds.
Then there is the ‘Nicklaus factor’.
When Nicklaus said farewell to the US Open in 2000, Woods won, same at St Andrews in 2000. The same thing happened at the USPGA championship and this year at the Masters.
Then there is Wood’s tournament record. He has never lost when leading after 36 holes.
World number two Vijay Singh is leading the chasing pack. He had a chance to finish seven under but missed an eight foot putt on the 18th and had to settle for a three-under 69.
Lying alongside Singh, is qualifier Brad Faxon and two-time Masters champion Jose Maria Olazabal.
Faxon shot a brilliant six-under 66 to put himself into contention. Olazabal, who played the first two rounds with Woods, earned his spot in second place thanks to an eagle on the last.
