Efforts being made to curb child labour

ISLAMABAD, July 15: The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has started various programmes to create mass awareness and enhance capacity of media organizations for accelerating efforts against child labour. Pakistan Television Corporation (PTV) and Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation (PBC) have started broadcasting programmes on the issue of child labour. Besides, a number of articles are being published in national dailies, said a press release here on Friday.

These programmes are a part of a joint project of the information ministry and the International Labour Organization to activate media for creating awareness on the issue.

The PBC has started broadcasting dramas on the issue since August 2004 every Sunday on national hook up at 9:15pm.

Similarly, the PTV started telecasting an Urdu drama serial “Masoom” every Thursday at 6:45pm on PTV-1 since June.

In addition, the PTV World telecasts discussion programmes and documentaries every Tuesday at 6:15pm. In the print media, about 80 articles have been published on the issue so far.

The project spanning over two years has set the target of telecasting 20 dramas of 25 minutes duration, eight discussion programmes, and eight documentaries based on in-depth reports and interviews with the children and stakeholders.

Similarly, the PBC would be broadcasting 20 Urdu dramas, 18 discussion programmes, 13 documentaries and 12 jingles.

Capacity building of media organizations to produce programmes on child labour is one of the important objectives of the project. As many as 250 media managers, producers and journalists were being trained on issues of child labour through workshops.— APP
