SWABI, July 13: Leaders of various political parties are poised to form alliances for the forthcoming local government elections while a local jirga comprising people from 56 union council of the district is also active to arrange seat adjustment with each other. According to information gathered by Dawn on Wednesday, political parties had reached a conclusion that it would be difficult to contest the elections without forming alliances at local level.
District Swabi has been included in the first phase of local bodies’ election and under the plan filing of nomination papers would start from July 16.
Sources in the Awami National Party (ANP) said that its district leadership had already consulted the tapa and union council leaders who empowered it to enter in an alliance with any political party. The names of expected contestants have also given to them.
The sources said fate of these candidates would also be decided by the district office-bearers of the party and in case of alliance with other parties some of the names would be dropped
“Our party is a very discipline one and its workers and leaders are collectively working according to the chalked-out strategy of the central and district leadership”, said one of its leaders.
The PML-N, the sources said, had constituted an eight-member committee to hold talks with other political parties but they declared that they would never enter in an alliance with the ruling PML-Q.
The Jamaat-i-Islami has announced that they would contest the elections from Al-Khidmat Group platform. Its MNA Muhammad Usman said that his party would contest elections from each union council and the names of the candidates had also been finalized.
The JUI-F has not shown great enthusiasm like that shown by the JI but its central leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman would visit the district on Sunday and, according to the insiders, vital decisions are expected to be taken during his crucial visit.
The PPP Parliamentarians, the sources said, is inclined to enter in an alliance with the PML-N, but it seems that the Nawaz League is desirous of an alliance with ANP. The two parties were in alliance with each other during the by-election of the district nazim in May 2004.
The ruling PML-Q is in a very awkward position after murder of former district nazim Sher Zaman Sher a month ago. However, insiders told Dawn, its leaders want an alliance with some like-minded political party.
Reports from other areas suggest that the local jirga was poised to nominate their candidates. The jirga members said that they wanted nomination of those people who were really interested in the welfare of the people.
