Nasir snatches under-13 crown

KARACHII, July 12: Pakistan’s Nasir Iqbal won the boys’ under-13 title of the junior international squash championship which concluded in the German city of Cologne on Monday night.

According to the results of the European Junior Grand Prix tournament made available on Tuesday, Nasir defeated Remi Soria of France 3-0 in a one-sided final.

Nasir was the only Pakistani player to win a title in the championship, which was held from July 8 to 11.

Waqar Mehboob from Peshawar was the only other Pakistani player to reach the finals of the tournament. Waqar, a newphew of former world number one Jansher Khan, featured in the boys’ under-17 event of the tournament. He was beaten 3-1 by N. Muller of Switzerland in the final.

Pakistan’s squad included five players who competed in the boy’ under-13, under-15 and under-17 categories of the international junior event.

The team, which was selected by the Pakistan Squash Federation (PSF) after trials, featured Nasir Iqbal (U-13), Farhan Zaman (U-15), Nosherwan (U-15), Shoaib Hassan (U-17)and Waqar Mehboob (U-17).

Danish Atlas was also selected to the national team but had to withdraw from the tournament after getting injured during a practice session in Peshawar last month.—PPI
