MMA parties form group for local polls
PESHAWAR, July 11: All the six component parties of the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) have resolved their differences and announced to contest the local body elections from the platform of the Muttahida Millat-i-Amal in Peshawar district. Speaking at a joint press conference here on Monday, the representatives of the alliance, led by provincial vice-president of the Jamaat-i-Islami (JI), Hakeem Abdul Waheed, said they had agreed to contest the polls under the umbrella of the new ‘MMA’ in Peshawar district.
Differences had cropped up in the six-party religious alliance over the adjustment of seats and JI had formed the Muttahida Khidmat-i-Amal (MKA) to contest the elections.
Five groups in the MMA, including JUI-F, Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (JUI-S), Markazi Jamiat Ahle Hadith, Jamiat Ulema-i-Pakistan and Tehreek-i-Islami Pakistan, formed the Muttahida Millat-i-Amal.
Mr Hakeem said they had resolved their differences and would field joint candidates at union council level in the district. Committees had been constituted in all 11 constituencies in the district, which would recommend names of the joint candidates in all 92 union councils of the district, he said.
If the committees failed to nominate the joint candidates, he said, senior leaders of the alliance would intervene and choose suitable person.
He said that after the formation of the new alliance, the JI had dissolved its MKA in Peshawar and would contest under the umbrella of the Muttahida Millat-i-Amal.
