India condemns attacks on shrines in UK

NEW DELHI, July 10: India on Sunday condemned incidents of apparent reprisals against Sikh and Muslim shrines in Britain and urged Prime Minister Tony Blair’s government to help maintain religious harmony in the aftermath of last week’s bomb attacks in London.

“We have seen reports of attacks on Islamic places of worship in the wake of the events of July 7 in the UK,” an Indian foreign ministry spokesman said. “Such shocking attacks go against the spirit of pluralism and religious freedom which the UK upholds.”

He said India was also deeply shocked at reports of attacks on two places of Sikh worship in Britain.
