English sets up all-Celtic ICC Trophy final

DUBLIN, July 10: Scotland will face Ireland in all-Celtic ICC Trophy final after Scottish batsman Cedric English came to his team’s rescue on Saturday. With both sides having already booked their places in the 2007 World Cup in the Caribbean, Saturday’s semifinals were all about making Wednesday’s final.

Chasing 220 to win against Bermuda at The Hills ground, the Scots were struggling at 52 for three, but English, who finished unbeaten on 75, and former England all-rounder Gavin Hamilton put on 145 for the fourth wicket to rescue their side.

Hamilton fell for 59 with 22 needed, but Dougie Brown settled Scottish nerves with a quick-fire 17.

Earlier in the day Bermuda captain Clay Smith’s decision to win the toss and bat was not rewarded by his top order as they crashed to 25 for three and 88 for seven.

But an unbeaten 53 from wicket-keeper Dean Minors and 45 from Lionel Cann helped the Bermudans post a competitive total.

Paul Hoffmann was the man who did the damage with the new ball as he quickly removed openers Delyone Borden and O.J. Pitchers.

Warwickshire all-rounder Brown then dismissed Irvine Romaine before Albert Steede and Saleem Mukuddem added 41 for the fourth wicket.

John Blain then had Smith caught behind by Dougie Lockhart and trapped Steede in front for 31 and Hoffmann returned to dismiss Janeiro Tucker.

But the Scots let Bermuda off the hook as Minors and Cann added 81 for the eighth wicket.

Watson removed Cann for 45, but Minors guided his side past 200 with a run-a-ball 53 that included three sixes.

Scotland did not help themselves with the ball as they gifted Bermuda 49 extras — including 30 wides.

And their chase did not get off to a good start as Dennis Archer removed the top order of Fraser Watts and Ryan Watson for seven and Hoffmann after he had blazed 27.

Ireland reached the final after an unbeaten 64 from Peter Gillespie guided the hosts to victory over Canada.

Chasing 239 to win, Ireland were in deep trouble on 106 for five but Gillespie put on a 66-run sixth wicket stand with Trent Johnston to guide their team to a dramatic four-wicket win.

Meanwhile, Holland and United Arab Emirates will playoff on Monday for the final qualifying spot for the World Cup.

The Dutch beat Denmark while the UAE saw off Namibia to set up Monday’s fifth-place decider.

Holland, who thrashed the Danes by 89 runs, were unlucky to miss out on automatic qualification from Group ‘B’ of the tournament but bounced back with determination.

Bas Zuiderent and Dan van Bunge both hit centuries as Holland amassed 314 for six in 50 overs.

Denmark did not get close in their reply and were bowled out in the final over for 225.

Freddie Klokker showed his individual class with 52.

The UAE ended Namibia’s dream of a second consecutive appearance at the World Cup.

Gerry Synman contributed 82 not out to a competitive Namibia target of 240 for seven in 50 overs but UAE produced their best batting performance of the tournament to reach the target with 18 balls to spare.

Syed Maqsood and skipper Khurram Khan were the key men for UAE. Maqsood finished not out on 84 while Khurram made a crucial 92-run contribution.
