A23 dead in Indian bus accident

DEHRADUN, July 9: At least 23 people were killed and 25 injured on Saturday when a crowded bus fell into a fast-flowing river in India’s northern hill state of Uttaranchal, an official said.

The accident occurred when the bus driver lost control and skidded off the road into a Ganges River gorge near the temple town of Rishikesh, 270 kilometres north of New Delhi.

R.P. Singh, a senior government official supervising the rescue operations, said that 23 bodies have been recovered. The injured have been admitted to local hospitals, he said.

Rescue operations were delayed as the river has been swollen by seasonal monsoon rains, the official added.—AFP
