Nadal in sight of 7th title

BAASTAD (Sweden), July 9: French Open champion Rafael Nadal can clinch his seventh title of the season on Sunday when he faces unheralded Czech Thomas Berdych in the final of the 302,000-euro claycourt tournament.

The 19-year-old Spaniard, who has dominated the claycourt season in 2005, has already won Acapulco, Monte Carlo, Rome, Barcelone, Costa Do Sauipe and the Roland-Garros crowns.

On Saturday he knocked out compatriot and third seed Tommy Robredo 6-3, 6-3 in just 90 minutes.

Berdych, also 19, claimed his place in the final beating his compatriot Jiri Vanek 7-5, 6-1.

Semifinal results: Tomas Berdych (Czech Republic) bt Jiri Vanek (Czech Republic) 7-5 6-1; Rafael Nadal (Spain) bt Tommy Robredo (Spain) 6-3 6-3.

GAUDIO IN FINAL

GSTAAD (Switzerland): Gaston Gaudio reached the final of the Swiss Open Saturday before persistent afternoon drizzle derailed the programme on another weather-hit day in the Alps.

The Argentine second seed won an all-South American semifinal 6-3, 6-2 to re-establish his career superiority over Chile’s Olympic gold medallist Nicolas Massu.
