JWP senator resigns

Published July 7, 2005

QUETTA, July 6: Senator Amanullah Kanrani of the Jamhoori Watan Party (JWP) has resigned from Senate. In his letter to Senate chairman, issued here on Wednesday night, he said the attitude of the centre was hostile and discriminatory towards federating units.

After the recent bloody incidents in Balochistan, he claimed, the federal government was planning another big military operation in the province.

He said the government had reduced the people of Balochistan to the status of slaves. The government did not recognize the right of the federating units on their resources and instead was offering false promises to mislead the people and make the issues more complex.

He said he had been repeatedly raising the issue on the floor of the Senate but to no avail. “In this situation, I no longer want to remain a senator,” he wrote.

He requested the chairman to accept his resignation.

Mr Kanrani also wrote a letter to the JWP president, Nawab Akbar Bugti, informing him of his decision.

He said he had formed his opinion after reading Nawab Bugti’s interview in which he had remarked that parliamentary politics was useless.
