BAHAWALPUR, July 6: A number of prospective candidates for tehsil nazims and naib nazims’ slots have emerged posing a tough time for former tehsil nazims in Bahawalpur district. With the bifurcation of Bahawalpur tehsil into city and Sadar councils, several new faces have started lobbying to capture the slots of tehsil nazims. Prominent figures aspiring for the nazim’s slot of the newly-created city council are PML district president Syed Irfan Gardezi, ex-MPA and PML central media coordinator Syed Tabish Alwari, divisional transport federation president Sohail Ashraf, former naib nazim Mueed Shah, ex-MNA Sahibzada Farooq Anwar Abbasi and former parliamentary secretary (PML-N) Samiullah Chaudhry.
Former Bahawalpur tehsil nazim Syed Najeeb Owaisi and naib nazim Malik Zahid Mahmood Channar are looking for the slot of Sadar council nazim.
Except for opposition’s Samiullah Chaudhry, all candidates are making efforts for their nomination from the former district nazim Tariq Cheema group, who will revive the Bahawalpur Ittehad claiming to be a non-political body.
In Hasilpur tehsil, the contest for the tehsil nazim’s slot is expected among four candidates hailing from rival groups of Tariq Cheema and that of MNA Mian Riaz Husain Peerzada.
Among them may be listed the names of former tehsil nazim Syed Sajjad Husain Bokhari of the Tariq Cheema group. He is expected to face the Peerzada group’s former MPAs Chaudhry Riaz Ahmed or Chaudhry Afzal Gill. Former Hasilpur municipal committee chairman Mohammad Jamil Jauhar will also be in the run for the nazim slot. As of now, Cheema group’s Chaudhry Sarwar Gill has emerged for the slot of Hasilpur tehsil naib nazim.
The Yazman tehsil is an important area in the district around which the local government politics revolves as former district nazim Tariq Cheema belongs to this tehsil. He had to face allegations at many places for utilizing huge development funds in Yazman tehsil.
Former tehsil nazim Chaudhry Abdul Jabbar, Tariq Cheema’s close associate, is expected to be opposed by PML-N tehsil president and former district council member Chaudhry Shafqat Javed. Another prospective candidate for this slot might be Chaudhry Nawaz Cheema, the cousin of Tariq Cheema.
Besides, JI leader and MMA district president Dr Mohammad Ashraf and Khalid Mahmood Jajja, the son of former MNA and PML-N district president Chaudhry Mumtaz Ahmed Jajja, are also assessing the situation. In Ahmedpur East tehsil, four candidates — former tehsil nazim Syed Samiul Hasan Gilani, PML activist Raafatur Rehmani, former PA deputy speaker Sahibzada Usman Daud’s brother Umar Daud Abbasi and Jahanzeb Warren, a cousin of MNA Aamir Yar Warren, are expected to run for the tehsil nazim slot.
