KARACHI: Karachi varsity gets pro-VC

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, July 6: A retired teacher has been called back to serve as pro-vicechancellor at the University of Karachi, it was officially learnt on Wednesday. An official communiqué said the Governor, Dr Ishratul Ibad, had appointed Dr Akhlaq Ahmad, who was retired as senior professor from the KU on superannuation in 2002, as PVC for a period of two years.

Prior to the selection, Dr Akhlaq was associated with the DHA as consultant on higher education.

In the latest appointment, the KU would see its fourth pro-VC since 1976 when Dr Mahfooz Ali, a banker, was brought in as the first one, after Dr Ahsan Rasheed’s appointment as VC.

The second PVC was Dr Sabir Ali, of the Pharmacy Faculty, who had come for a very brief period.

The third PVC, Dr Pirzada Qasim, an in-service faculty member of the university, was appointed in the mid 1990s during Dr Hafiz Pasha’s tenure as the VC.

Dr Akhlaq did his master’s in science from the KU and then acquired a doctoral degree from England.

Meanwhile, the governor has also allowed Mazharul Siddiqui, the VC of Sindh University, to continue on his post for another four years. Mr Siddiqui was to complete his existing tenure on July 17.
