BELFAST (Ireland), July 5: Top contenders Holland, Scotland and the hosts Ireland took another step closer to the 2007 World Cup after maintaining their unbeaten run in the ICC Trophy competition on Monday.
Ireland survived some anxious moments before pulling off a two-wicket victory over the United Arab Emirates (UAE) with just one ball to spare in their Group ‘A’ clash. Their hero was Middlesex batsman Ed Joyce, who hit an undefeated 115 – his second century in the ongoing tournament.
Pace bowler Ali Asad Abbas gave UAE the ideal start by taking three early wickets as the Irish crashed to 23 for four. But Joyce and all-rounder Trent Johnston (67) came together in a fifth-wicket partnership of 122 before Paul Mooney scrambled for the winning run.
In the same group, Irvine Romaine slammed a cavalier half century and Ryan Steede grabbed three wickets to steer Bermuda to their second win, a 93-run triumph over Denmark.
Lionel Cann, whose swashbuckling knock was basis of Bermuda’s victory over UAE in their last game, bolstered lower order with 41 from just 18 balls with five fours and two sixes to give innings impetus.
Uganda, meanwhile, picked up their first win of the tournament with a six-wicket rout of United States of America.
Holland scored their third straight success by defeating their 2003 World Cup rivals Namibia by six wickets after the Africans looked like heading for a respectable total at 148 for five. But fast bowler Edgar Schiferli struck thrice in one over to send the Namibians hurtling to 188 all out.
Pacemen Dougie Brown and John Blain shared eight wickets between them before Scotland completed an ungainly five-wicket win against Papua New Guinea.
Oman put up a far better performance before going down to Canada by a slender margin of two wickets.
